Student-Age Programs
Since 1971, the After School and
Summer Enrichment Program has provided after
school activities to community youth. Since 2001
we have collaborated with the Isla Vista After
School Education & Safety Program (ASES) funded
through the CA Department of Education.
Subsequently we have doubled the number of
children served after school and increased the
quality and quantity of services to children. The
program is used primarily by working and/or
student parents who depend on this affordable
program as a daily after school arrangement.
The After School and Summer Enrichment
Program offers a variety of activities and
enrichment clubs, supervised recreation, sports,
arts and crafts, field trips, cooking projects and
nutritional snacks for a $45 monthly fee per child.
A wide variety of interest clubs were offered: the
environment, drama, music, art, marble shooting,
sports, literacy, science, knitting, sign language,
airplanes, math games, painting, jewelry making
and anti-tobacco.
The program is held on site at Isla Vista
Elementary School and is open during the school
year from 2:30 to 6:00pm, and during the
summer months from 1:00pm to 5:30pm.
Daily homework assistance and reading
time are mandatory activities for all children
attending the program. Tutoring is provided to
those children who need extra assistance
completing their schoolwork. 83% of the
children enrolled in the program received a
satisfactory grade or higher in homework on
their report card.
The Extended Summer Program was
created in 1985 in response to community need
for full-day summer programming for working
and/or student parents. Open from 7:30 - 1:00,
it is designed to link with the year-round
afternoon Enrichment Program, thereby
extending programming during the summer
months from 7:30 - 5:30. The longer day allows
for more field trips out into the community as
well as weekly swim times at UCSB.
